AMONG those who participated in the online programme titled “An Introduction to Forestry in Sarawak”.
BINTULU: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Pertanian Jepun (NODAI) in Tokyo continue their cooperation in the field of forestry-related education and research.
Recently, the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Science, UPM Bintulu Campus, Sarawak organized the program titled An Introduction to Forestry in Sarawak to provide exposure to education and research conducted in Sarawak's forests to NODAI staff and students online from 11th to 12th December.
Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Science UPM Bintulu Campus, Dr Zamri Rosli said the two universities are planning staff and student exchange cooperation as well as cooperation with forestry experts from Japan.
According to him, UPM and NODAI researchers are also active in research related to forest management and contribution such as silviculture and forest therapy.
“Cooperation between UPM and NODAI has been carried out for a long time, especially in the field of forest rehabilitation. UPM is always open to research collaboration with all parties whether local or international to further strengthen its role as a forest research hub in Sarawak with the Sarawak Forest Department as announced by the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Openg.
"NODAI students are also invited to further their graduate studies at UPM," he said here recently.
Forestry topics discussed in the two-day program include wildlife management, mangrove swamps, rich flora and fauna as well as information on Fully Protected Areas (TPA) in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, the research representative from Tokyo NODAI, Dr Mami Irie hopes that the cooperation between UPM and NODAI can be carried out face to face starting next year as research related to forestry needs to be held face-to-face and on-site.
