Designed to Engage: An ICAP Intervention in an ESL Classroom

A) Ageing population and economic growth: Evidence from Malaysia

Introduction:

Past studies reported that sociocultural factors were among the causes of low English language proficiency level. Factors such as social and cultural isolation from English, lack of acceptance of English, social marginalisation, cultural and educational backgrounds discouraging English, and negative sociocultural attributes had caused disengagement from intellectual tasks in the classroom. This drawback has resulted in low proficiency in English among ESL learners. This study has successfully designed and developed a culturally responsive English language instruction guided by the culturally responsive teaching theory and the ICAP framework to engage ESL learners. The intervention had produced three main engaging characteristics and transformative effects advantageous to ESL learners.
