C) Socio-economic characteristics of pepper planters in Sarawak
Introduction:
Sarawak pepper is well-known for its quality and the industry is making a comeback as the government is encouraging farmers to plant pepper. Pepper is largely planted in Sarawak and the incentives by government through its agencies such as the Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB) and the Agriculture Department are helping farmers to plant new areas for pepper as it targets to be one of the major producer in the world by increasing the acreage. Smallholders are the major players in the state and most of them own small area of planting perhaps because of the high cost associated with pepper planting. There need to be a baseline study to look into the socio-economic characteristics of pepper planters and to assess the attractiveness of pepper planting to them. Potential return largely depends on the price of pepper in the market and we have seen the interest in pepper planting in the last few years is perhaps because of the constant increase in the price of pepper in the last ten years, before it began to decline two years ago. As most farmers are not highly educated, they need to know basic financial management to manage their farm and to know how to market their products.
