Buffalo Project

Efficient production within the livestock industry is of primary importance for sustainability of food chains in Malaysia. The livestock industry is an important economic resource within the agricultural sector, and is vital for the supply of meat, poultry, eggs, fish, and others. Our group focuses on addressing the significance of nutrition, meat quality, breeding, farm management and biosecurity to livestock productivity.

The Malaysian buffalo or Water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis is a very important livestock to the local people in Sabah and Sarawak. Nevertheless, Bubalus bubalis or locally known as ‘kerbau sawah’ is a neglected animal compared to cattle and goats. There is a paucity of information on breeding, knowledge on meat quality, growth performance, carcass characteristics, reproductive physiology, and disease status on domestic water buffalo in Malaysia especially in Sarawak.
