UPM EMBRACES THE THIRD-TIME OVERALL CHAMPION OF SUKIPT 2022

TANJUNG MALIM, 21 August- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for the third time won the overall throne of the 2022 Higher Education Institutions Games (SUKIPT) at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) from 12 to 21 August, today.

The success of winning 38 gold, 19 silver and 20 bronze enabled UPM to become the overall defending champion of SUKIPT repeating the same success in 2012 and 2018.

In the meantime, UPM also made a sweet spot when the men's Rugby team won the overall best men's team award and took home RM7,000 in cash and a round trophy.

Vice-Chancellor of UPM, YH. Prof. Dato Dr. Mohd Roslan Sulaiman was grateful when UPM was crowned the overall winner of SUKIPT 2022.

"This is the third time that UPM has been named the overall SUKIPT in 2012, 2018 and 2022.

"I am very pleased with the efforts of UPM athletes and officials who are trying to win the overall SUKIPT 2022. UPM will also continue to work to empower the sports involved to maintain the championship," he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of the UPM Sports Academy, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tajularipin Sulaiman said the party will make an appreciation program for the athletes who participated in SUKIPT 2022.

Commenting on the reach of the gold medal target, he said the UPM contingent is close to reaching the 40 gold medals targeted.

"At first we targeted 35 gold medals, then looked at the progress of our athletes having risen to 38 medals and on the last day we targeted 40.

"However I remain grateful and happy with these 38 golds. The sports academy will continue to look for the sports talents of UPM students, training and providing the best facilities for athletes," he said.

UPM excelled in the athletics court when it won 19 gold medals and topped both the men's and women's categories for the Rugby 7s event.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Higher Education (MOHE) Senator Dato Dr.Ahmad Masrizal Muhammad, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), UPM, Prof. Dr. Ismi Arif Ismail and Director of the Centre for Co-curriculum and Student Development (PKPP), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Omrah Hassan @ Hussin. -UPM
