Bintulu: February 17^th, 2023, Biodiversity Borneo Laboratory, Institute of Ecosystem Science Borneo (IEB), Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) has conducted a workshop entitled “Hydroponic Gardening with Effective Microbes” under the program “Team Up with Invisible Minority Yet Powerful Organisms (T-I-N-Y) under the “Knowledge Transfer Grant Scheme (KTGS)” funded by University Community Transformation Centre-UCTC UPM in partnership with Bintulu Division Agriculture Office.

The workshop was held specially for the Centre of Rehabilitation in the Community (Pertubuhan Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti) (PPDK Bintulu). The project aims to teach the community members and OKU participants in PPDK Bintulu to plant their own hydroponic vegetables guided by experts from UPMKB. PPDK Bintulu is an organization that conveys a strategy for the development of disabled people (OKU) communities in Bintulu who require rehabilitation and basic training in terms of movement, speech, special education, and skills in self-management.

The project was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Leong Sui Sien (IEB Research Associate and Department of Animal Sciences and Fishery, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry, UPMKB) and is aimed to transfer knowledge and expertise of UPMKB in upgrading the economy and skills of OKU communities through hydroponic gardening by utilizing effective microbes. During the first workshop, training was provided on the theory of planting by the expertise, Dr. Latifah Binti Omar (Head of Biodiversity Borneo Laboratory, IEB, UPMKB) and Dr. Azizul Hakim Lahuri (Senior Lecturer, Department of Science and Technology, Faculty of Humanities, Management and Science, UPMKB).
