STUDENTS NEED TO EMPOWER THEIR ABILITY THROUGH CO-CURRICULUM

BINTULU: New students need to highlight their potential in various co-curricular activities offered at the university to strengthen their capabilities in various fields.

Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Roslan Sulaiman said students should highlight their talents in sports, debate, culture and others through clubs, associations and subjects offered at the university.

He said, with that capacity, the university will be able to empower students by giving them more trust, responsibility, and trust in the implementation of association activities.

"It is in line with the Empowerment of Students in the New Year's Message 2023 by the Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin," he said at the New Student Pledge Ceremony of the 2023/2024 Academic Session of the Diploma and Diploma Preparatory Science Programme at the Sri Kenyalang Hall, at UPM Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) recently.

TThe text of his speech was read by UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Dr Nazamid Saari.

A total of 198 new undergraduates and students attended the ceremony witnessed by the university committee and UPMKB lecturers.

He said new students also need to improve their English language proficiency to make UPM graduates with global status while looking for jobs thus becoming an attraction for multinational and international companies to gain their abilities as workers.

He added, students need to use the advantages of learning at university to hone their mastery of English through writing and communication.

At the same time, he advised the students to appreciate the fifth principle of Rukun Negara which is Courtesy and Courtesy with prudence especially when communicating on social media by not issuing outrageous comments, defamatory verses, slurs, and envy.

He said such negative actions can damage the thinking and manners of being a human being who adheres to religious and cultural values.

Also present were UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student and Alumni Affairs) Professor Dr Arifin Abdu, UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Partnership) Professor Dr BT Hang Tuah Baharudin and UPMKB Campus Director Professor Shahrul Razid Sarbini.
