“NYUNGKAK KA BUAH KENYALANG” PROGRAM

On 10 to 12 March 2023, a total of 69 students from the Diploma in Agriculture Semester 2 Session 2022/2023, Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus had successfully organised the 'Nyungkak Ka Buah Kenyalang' Program under the SULAM initiative at Banyan Anak Mawan Longhouse, Selangau. This program was held specifically to create awareness to the local community on the importance of preserving and conserving the extinct or native fruits in Sarawak.

Among the activities for the program include exposure of fruit preservation through seedball methodcrop breeding methods, preparation of crop media, Custome Design and Fruit Puzzle, Nature Walk and others. Tuai Rumah, Mr. Banyan Anak Mawan said the program was very good and coincided with the introduction to the local community to preserve the extinct fruit species and vanished as a heritage treasure.

Such programs can also train university students in applying the skills and knowledge of agriculture that have been learned as well as producing students as agents of agricultural development. In turn, through this program, students can improve their communication skills in interacting with the public as well as create positive relationships between the university and the outside community.

The 3-day 2-night program, coordinated by the Program Advisor, Dr. Shiamala Devi Ramaiya, was also participated by 82 residents of Banyan Anak Mawan Longhouse, Selangau.
