FRESHWATER FISH BREEDING COURSES IN UPMKB ARE ABLE TO ENHANCE THE POTENTIAL OF THE AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY

Bintulu – On 15 and 16 July 2023, the Putra Agricultural Centre (PPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) organised a Freshwater Fish Farming Course with 24 participants from various districts in Sarawak, including Bintulu, Miri, Sarikei, and Kuching.

According to Dr. Carlina Freddie Simol @ Rachellynna, who is also the Senior Agriculture Officer, PPP, UPMKB, this theoretical and practical course was held to provide basic and advanced knowledge on freshwater fish farming such as Tilapia, Catfish, Jelawat, Patin, and Baung. "In this course, participants were exposed to the general needs of animal husbandry, pool preparation, day-to-day management to the marketing aspect of catches" she said.

According to Deputy Director of PPP, UPMKB, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amy Halimah binti Rajaee, the course is in line with the initiative of the University for Society (U4S) or IPT for Society@Keluarga Malaysia (UNITY). "We hope that this programme will enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants to strengthen agriculture and help to cope with the food security crisis in our country," she added.

Prof. Dr. Shahrul Razid Sarbini, Director of Campus, UPMKB said such programmes are designed to ensure the transfer of agricultural technology to the community for the betterment and well-being of the local community. "We on the part of UPMKB Management certainly support the efforts undertaken by PPP, UPMKB so that the membership and expertise of academic and non-academic staff can be used more widely to the public" he said.

Among the speakers, instructors, facilitators, and officers involved in this course were Dr. Wan Zabidii Wan Morni, Mr. Lirong Yu Abit Mr. Ayum Anak Balai, Mr. Raymond Lau, Ms. Michelle Polda anak Nap, Mr. Leonard Umban anak Pengarah, Mr. Miguel Isaiah Vincent Mojilis, Ms. Josephine Jawai Makos, Mrs. Jega Jantai and Mr. Benedict Miden.
