ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS PROGRAM ON TREE PLANTING

#UPMKBMansang

Bintulu, 27 October 2022 (UPMKB) - Universiti Putra Malaysia in collaboration with the Department of Environment and OCIM Sdn Bhd organized an Environmental Awareness Program on Tree Planting "1 Ras 1 Tree" in conjunction with World Environment Day Celebration 2022 and responded to the government's call in the campaign to plant 100 million trees in the period from 2021 to 2025.

UPMKB Campus Director Prof. Dr. Shahrul Razid said, today's program is one of the strategies coordinated by UPMKB, Department of Environment and OCIM Sdn. Bhd. This greening program is also designed as one of the strategies for pollution prevention action strategies through a resource control approach using nature-based solutions. It is hoped that today's event will bring some awareness among us about the importance of the environment towards our earth. In addition, this obligation is our shared responsibility and commitment.

In addition, today's program is also aimed at promoting cooperation between all parties such as government agencies, institutions of higher learning and industry players for the benefit of the environmental ecosystem in Sarawak. Hopefully, such programs related to the environment will continue again in the future. Today's tree planting program is an activity that can have a significant positive impact on our daily lives as well as in the future.

Among these activities is a step in countering the effects of climate change that affect our earth today. As we already know, today's extreme climate change can no longer be changed to return to its original state. In fact, the way to deal with this issue is to use an adaptive approach. Tree planting is one of the effective ways to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Program Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Geoffery James Gerusu said, through this program, temperature changes can be reduced, and the net oxygen content can be increased. It also helps our country maintain the sustainability of a clean environment when it conserves and expands the green areas of the earth. Today we will plant 150 seedlings consisting of 3 (three) species namely: lime hill (dryobalanops beccarii) copper meranti (shorea leprosula); Meranti Batu (shore dasphylla).

This greening program is also designed as one of the strategies of pollution prevention action through a control approach at source using nature-based solutions. It is hoped that today's event will bring some awareness among us about the importance of the environment towards our earth.

He hopes that tree planting activities will instill a good memory in our minds in the hope that this will create a personal awareness towards conserving and preserving our environment.

Also present were Prof. Dr. Shahrul Razid Sarbini, Director of Universiti Putra Malaysia Campus Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB), along with Dr. Zamri bin Rosli, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Forestry UPMKB, Campus Management Members, Faculty Management Members, Department of Forestry Science staff and Diploma in Forestry 1st semester student.

Finally, he expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Choi Sung Kil, President, OCIM Sdn. Bhd. and all employees of OCIM Sdn. Bhd., Department of Environment (DOE), Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), staff and students of UPMKB for their active participation in today's program.
