COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES FOR JOYCE MORRIS'S INTEREST CONTRIBUTE TO SARAWAK

BINTULU, Sept 16 – Being exposed to community activities since childhood has fostered Joyce Morris Kapong's interest in continuing to contribute to the communities in the interior of Lundu, Bario, and Limbang, Sarawak.

She who served as a Language Teacher at CALC@UPMKB, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus UPMKB said he was willing to take the dirt and forest roads for the sake of interest in community activities.

"My parents introduced me to community activities. When I accompanied them to visit the communities in the interior of Lundu, Bario, and Limbang I felt the excitement and helped the community there as best we could," she said.

She said his involvement in community activities to this day has taught her to continue to strengthen unity among ethnic groups in the Land of Hornbills.

As a native of the Kuching Kelabit tribe, she emphasised on unity among the Sarawak community.

"Some may think of this unity as something 'cliché', but the fact is, it encourages me to continue to carry out community activities here.

"We are open to learning and accepting each other's traditions and ways of life while trying to help each other move forward in life.

She acknowledged that, the more active she is in community activities, the more added value she has besides continuing to explore the treasures and diversity of cultures and races in Sarawak.

So far, she cannot forget his memories of conducting community activities at SK Ulu Lubai (High Performance School, 2nd Cohort), Limbang in 2012.

Sharing her experience during the trip to SK Ulu Lubai was not easy as after a six-hour drive from Bintulu to Limbang, her team had to pass through Brunei and had to go through the forest using a dirt road to get to school.

"There, we stayed at the school for a few days, and conducted activities with students, teachers and parents and visited the surrounding longhouse to get to know the community better.

"We see how the community is a strong foundation for the excellence of their children who attend school in SK Ulu Lubai," she said.

It is clear that friendship with the community needs to be strengthened as trust and accountability can flourish.

She loves Malaysia with all her heart and hopes that every Malaysian regardless of state will have the opportunity to enjoy all the diversity of races in the country.

"May Malaysians continue to experience all the blessings that God has bestowed upon our country, so that no one is left behind from the progress that is happening at this time. Happy 60th Malaysia Day!," she said.
