BDA COMMUNITY PROGRAM SUCCESSFULLY AT SK RUMAH KESENG ULU TATAU

BINTULU: Teachers and students of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rumah Keseng Ulu Tatau were treated to various programs by government agencies and local universities through the Community Interweaving and Networking Program at the school recently.

The program is recommended by the Bintulu Progress Board (BDA) in collaboration with the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Forestry Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB), the Department of Environment (JAS) Bintulu Branch and the Natural Resources and Environment Institute (NREB).

Among the activities held covering 200 participants were contribution presentation, motivational talks and planting of local species saplings in the school grounds.

Program director Lydia Soloma Jalong said, through related knowledge sharing activities, she hopes that the younger generation can assist in future environmental management for the sustainability of development and economic growth in the division.

She said the activity of planting saplings encourages various positive impacts in line with the BDA Strategic Plan 2024-2030 towards a low-carbon industrial urban hub.

"It helps address climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide, improving air quality and reducing erosion and conserving wildlife habitats," she said.

She said a total of 15 saplings of the local species, the belian (Eusideroxylon Zwageri) and eight landscape trees, namely the prayer tree (Bucida molineti) were planted around the school area.

Speaking at the opening of the programme, BDA Assistant General Manager of Environmental Services Maimunah Matali said the program is expected to benefit the school and the surrounding community.

"We want to motivate students to become a holistic generation and not be left behind in the flow of urban development, especially in Bintulu," she said.

Thus, she said, BDA contributed furniture for the resource centre, books and communication and information technology (ICT) hardware to improve the existing basic facilities, thus improving the quality of teaching and learning in the school.

At the same time, lectures related to environmental sustainability awareness were also delivered by NREB, sharing of wildlife-related knowledge by UPMKB, colouring competition themed Love the Earth by JAS, demonstration of chicken pie cooking for community prosperity and the BDA Plant and Animal Garden (TUMBINA) wheel quiz.

This program is to apply knowledge, new knowledge and basic facilities in facing future challenges in line with the 45th anniversary of BDA and 60 Years of Sarawak Merdeka and form a vibrant, resilient and sustainable community including transforming the environment and facilities in the school.
