AGRICULTURAL EXPANSION PROJECT RH. JUNGAN, BINTULU

AGRICULTURAL EXPANSION PROJECT AT RH. JUNGAN, BINTULU

Urban Farming

The agricultural expansion project themed Urban Farming was carried out on 17 September 2022 (Saturday) at Rh. Jungan, KM25, Jalan Bintulu-Tatau. Activities start from 8.00 am to 5.30 pm. The objective of this project is to create a knowledge sharing platform on agricultural methods that are suitable for environmental factors and community needs.

This project also trains students on the implementation of agricultural expansion programs with the community as well as providing exposure to the community on the simple concept of modern agriculture. Prior to starting the project, the students made their first visit on 9 August 2022 to Rh. Jungan for a meeting session with the Rh. Jungan community and to find out their problems and needs in agriculture. The project is led by Dr. Anita as an instructor of the Agricultural Development course.

A total of 40 students from the Diploma in Agribusiness (5th semester) were involved and several community members from Rh. Jungan had collaborated on this project, and they were divided into three (3) groups. In addition, the urban agriculture project implemented is themed with eco-friendly elements where agricultural sites are prepared using natural materials such as bamboo and wasted materials such as plastic bottles and car tires.

Among the vegetables grown are leaf vegetables (mustard, leeks, spinach), iban eggplant, bendi beans and bottled beans. The vegetable cultivation site is designed according to the creativity of the students and the community. After the completion of the vegetable planting site, the Rh. Jungan community continued the project as a daily activity and renovated the vegetable sites according to their creativity. This project is not only a vegetable garden, but it can be a garden or landscape to beautify the area in Rh. Jungan.

Our deepest appreciation to the students of Diploma in Agribusiness (5th semester) and the Rh. Jungan community for their commitment and cooperation to make this project a success. Next, thanks also to Mr. Nalong Ak. Buda and Mr. Dennis Len Bin Gouk, from Putra Agricultural Centre (PAC) for contributing the idea of urban agriculture implementation to the students as well as assisting them in terms of the provision of farm equipment and crop materials.

The project was organized in the hope of giving and sparking innovative ideas to the community in general and its students specially to expand the scope of their thinking on the potential in agriculture.
