145 UPM BINTULU STUDENTS JOIN ‘BERGEMPURU KITAI SEMUA’ PROGRAM IN SEBAUH

BINTULU (Jan 25): A total of 145 students of Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) took part in the ‘Bergempuru Kitai Semua’ program at Rumah Meikle Ding, Sungai Sekutan, Sebauh.

The three-day programme from Jan 20 to 22 was jointly organised by Kelab Bioindustri (Bio-Inc), Kelab Perhutanan (Fortress) and Kelab Akuakultur (AgriAqua).

Its spokesperson, Gloria Mendrick said, the name of the program was taken from the Iban language which means ‘We all gather together’ that involved students, lecturers and the local community from the 28-door longhouse.

“From the survey at the longhouse, we found that most residents know the basic knowledge of traditional farming but lack exposure on modern agricultural knowledge.

“Thus this program was organised to increase their general knowledge apart from learning basic farming techniques that are environmentally friendly, simple and easy to understand.

“Besides that the program was also aimed at fostering closer rapport between students and the local people and at the same time to build their own self-confidence in the activities including understanding local culture and customs such as ‘bertabuh’, ‘ngajat’ and ‘gagong’,” she said.

Among those who present at the closing of the program were Sebauh district officer Mr. William Manggoi, Tuai Rumah Meikle Ding, program director Julian Jawan and program advisor Dr. Jessica Jeyanthi.

Various activities were held during the program which included talks by UPMKB Department of Crop Science, Faculty Of Agricultural And Forestry Sciences senior lecturer Dr. Franklin Ragai Kudat, Assoc. Prof. Dr. John Keen Chubo from UPMKB Department of Forestry Science, Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences and UPMKB Department Of Animal Science And Fisheries lecturer, Mr. Lirong Yu Abit.

Dr. Franklin talked about soilless agriculture while Assoc. Prof. Dr. John and Mr. Lirong touched on the tree grafting technique and freshwater fish reproduction respectively.

The residents were also learned the good farming practices from demonstrations by Mr. Awie Danguah and Mr. Dennis Lek Gouk from Putra Agriculture Centre of UPMKB.

“From this program, the students learned and exposed to various knowledge and experiences that hopefully can shape their personality and also strengthening their soft skills which can only be obtained on the field and not in the classroom,” said Gloria.
