SARAWAK PREMIER NAME ENSHRINED ON ORCHIDS

KUCHING, Sept 12: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg agrees his name is enshrined as the scientific name of a new species of orchid discovered by a researcher from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

The new species was discovered during a scientific expedition to Ulu Ketibas, Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary in 2008.

According to the Vice-Chancellor of UPM, Dato' Dr. Mohd.  Roslan Sulaiman, the new species took almost 15 years to confirm.

"We call the orchid Bulbophyllum Abangjoeii." This orchid is very unique in that it is striped and was discovered about 14 years ago."

He made the remarks at a press conference after paying a courtesy visit to the Sarawak Premier led by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of UPM, Tengku Syarif Laksamana Perlis Dato' Seri Diraja Syed Razlan Syed Putra Jamalullail this morning.

Meanwhile, Tengku Syarif Laksamana Perlis Dato' Seri Diraja Syed Razlan Syed Putra Jamalullail informed that for the first time the UPM convocation ceremony for Bintulu campus will be held next November.

"This is to pay tribute to Sarawak for giving UPM the opportunity to open a campus in Bintulu.

"From this year, the convocation ceremony of UPM Bintulu campus will be held in Bintulu," he said.

A total of 471 students are expected to attend the convocation which involves students of diploma, bachelor's degree, master's degree and Doctor of Philosophy (PHD) level. -TVS
