CONGRATULATIONS TO UPMKB RESEARCHERS ON THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS AT THE 6TH EDITION INTERNATIONAL INVENTION INNOVATION COMPETITION IN CANADA (ICAN2021) AWARDS.

Prof. Dr. Ahmed Osumanu Haruna who is the current Head of Biodiversity Borneo Laboratory, Institut Ekosains Borneo (IEB) and his research team, Dr. Latifah Omar (Universiti Putra Malaysia Kampus Bintulu), Dr. Kevin Muyang Tawie Sulok (Malaysia Pepper Board Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia), Dr. Adiza Alhassan Musah (Management and Science University Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), and Liza Nuriati Lim Kim Choo (Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, Malaysia), won the following awards at The 6th Edition International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada  (iCAN2021):

(1) Top 20 Best Invention Award

(2) Special Award (Indonesian Invention and Innovation Promotion Association, INNOPA)

(3) Gold Medal

The 6th Edition iCAN2021 held virtually started on 30 June 2021 in Toronto, Canada and extended to 28 August 2021 for “The Final” event and official announcement. The innovation which won the three awards is entitled “Enhancing soil and crop productivity for food security”. The 6th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, iCAN 2021 was organized by Toronto International Society of Innovation and Advanced Skills (TISIAS), locally supported by the Innovation Initiative Cooperative Inc. "The Inventors Circle" Toronto, and internationally supported by International Federation of Inventors' Associations (IFIA), and World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA). High crop yield, good quality, and net profit could not be achieved from degraded soils which are not only low in fertility but they are also high in aluminium, iron, and manganese. Thus, the pressing need for achieving agronomic, economic, and environmental efficiency was the driving force behind Prof. Dr. Ahmed Osumanu Haruna and his research associates to come out with their current recognized innovation of world repute. The award winners transformed vegetables, fruits, pineapples, and animal wastes into solid and liquid amendments which are able to improve soil productivity, cash crops growth, yield, fruit/grain quality, and economic income on nutrient deficient organic and inorganic soils without degrading the quality of the environment.
