UPM BINTULU ATHLETE WINS PSS-WTF TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL

The Sarawak-SSC State Taekwondo (WTF) Championship 2023 martial arts competition was held at Bintulu Muhibbah Stadium from 10 to 12 March with the participation of more than 800 athletes from all over Sarawak.

The tournament was organized by the Sarawak State Taekwondo Association (PTNS) with Sarawak Sports Corporation (PSS) and was organized by the Taekwondo Smart Bintulu Club together with Vocational College and Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB).

Three UPMKB athletes from UPMKB Taekwondo Club representing the Bintulu Smart Taekwondo Club won four gold, one silver and one bronze medals.

Farah Syameera Mohd Fairoz won three golds each in the Individual Poomsae, Mixed Paired and Open Sparring categories.

Another athlete, Russell Tang Hsien won one gold in the Mix Paired category and one silver in the Individual Poomsae, while Siew Yuen Bing won one bronze medal in the individual Poomsae.

In addition, 20 volunteers from UPMKB combined with Taekwondo Club and Social & Community Youth Club also helped to make the tournament a success. The involvement and commitment of UPMKB students at the state level tournament led by the secretariat of experienced PTNS is very encouraging.

The exposure of organizing state-level tournaments can directly improve communication and technical skills in addition to adding to the students' own experience.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Samalaju Assemblyman Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Majang Renggi.

In his closing remarks, Majang expressed his pride in the achievements of Sarawak-born athletes, and he believed taekwondo was a successful sport that made Sarawak and the country proud.

He also presented a plaque of appreciation to the representatives of the joint organizers and Dr Wan Zabidii Wan Morni, UPMKB Taekwondo Club Advisor representing the Director of Campus, Professor Dr Shahrul Razid Sarbini received the award.
