UPMKB STRENGTHEN AGRICULTURE FOR FOOD SECURITY

Continue to help the government with the application of agricultural knowledge, aquaculture to the people

BINTULU: Putra Agricultural Centre (PPP) Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) continues to assist the government by applying agricultural knowledge and aquaculture to the people of the state to ensure the country's food security.

Deputy Director of PPP UPMKB Associate Professor Dr Amy Halimah Rajaee hopes that it will enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants to empower agriculture, thus helping the government achieve the national food security agenda.

She said, not only that, this initiative is also in line with the slogan 'University for Society (U4S)' or IPT (institute of higher learning) for Society@ Keluarga Malaysia (Perpaduan).

She said this during the Freshwater Fish Farming Course which was attended by 24 participants from Bintulu, Miri, Sarikei and Kuching at the campus on 15 and 16 July.

Meanwhile, UPMKB Campus Director Professor Dr Shahrul Razid Sarbini said such programmes are designed to ensure the transfer of agricultural technology to the community for the betterment and well-being of the community.

He said the management of UPMKB supports the efforts undertaken by PPP so that the membership and expertise of its academic and non-academic staff can be used by the general public.

PPP Senior Agriculture Officer Dr Carlina Freddie Simol@Rachellynna said the theoretical and practical course provides advanced basic knowledge on freshwater fish farming such as tilapia, catfish, jelawat, patin and baung.

"Participants are exposed to basic needs in animal husbandry, pool preparation, day-to-day management to the marketing aspect of catches," she said.

Facilitators and speakers involved were Dr Wan Zabidii Wan Morni, Lirong Yu Abit, Ayum Balai, Raymond Lau, Michelle Polda Nap, Leonard Umban Director, Miguel Isaiah Vincent Mojilis, Josephine Jawai Makos, Jega Jantai and Benedict Miden.
