UPM BINTULU STUDENTS USE RECYCLED MATERIALS TO CREATE AQUATIC DECOR AT SK KIDURONG

BINTULU (Oct 24): A group of 27 first semester students pursuing a Diploma in Fisheries at Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu campus (UPMKB) have used recycled materials to create marine and freshwater fisheries décor for SK Kidurong’s cafeteria walkway.

A press release said they meticulously crafted educational fish models, making the space not just visually appealing but also intellectually stimulating.

“More than a mere aesthetic endeavour, their project was fuelled by a noble purpose — to inspire and educate young minds about the intricate world of fisheries,” said Assoc Prof Dr Leong Sui Sien from the Department of Animal Sciences and Fishery, Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences.

“Their mission was to ignite curiosity and interest among their younger peers, imparting practical wisdom beyond textbooks.”

Under the expert guidance of Leong and Denny Brooke Jilan, the students embarked on a transformative practical field programme for the FMB 2112 Fish Biology, SULAM course.

Their initiative, named the ‘Canteen Passage Decorating Project: Fish Gallery’, served as a vital link between classroom theories and real-world experiences.

Employing the Experiential Learning and Competency-Based Education Landscape (EXCEL) and a Community Resilience Experiential Learning (CARE) approach, Leong said the programme emphasised the importance of community engagement and hands-on learning, transcending traditional educational boundaries.

“This initiative not only highlighted the transformative power of education but also underscored the significant impact that higher education institutions like UPM Bintulu Campus can have on nurturing future talents and advancing society,” she said.

SK Kidurong headmaster Abdul Samad Rosli thanked the students for their dedication in fostering enthusiasm for the wonders of science, particularly in the context of SDG 14 Life Below Water.

He said this endeavour succeeded in embedding valuable knowledge in the daily lives of primary school pupils, paving the way for a brighter and more informed future.
