UPM BINTULU IMPLEMENTS GREEN SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE

BINTULU: A Green Sustainability programme initiative has been undertaken by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus to promote green activities.

UPM said a few green activities and actions will be followed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the Education Sustainable Development Goals (ESDG).

Among the green activities and actions are energy saving, use of rain harvesting water, promotion and systemisation of the electronic document control system to minimise printing, as well as achieving the green campus title by implementing green activities.

“Green is not only a colour, as it deals with the environment and human health, or the things that benefit the environment. It also denotes how natural resources are being used by humans to reduce their impact on the environment.

“Using the word ‘green’ instead of ‘sustainable’ or reciprocal is very common. However, it creates confusion that green can be synonymous with sustainable. In fact, green is one dimension of sustainability, and sustainability refers to the environment, social equity, and economic vitality.

“Green can be used for the present and future, but sustainability only deals with the future. Both support the conservation of natural resources.

“So, we can define green sustainability as the use of products or natural resources in this way as actions or activities that can fulfil the present requirement or can be used for future generations without harming the environment and human health,” it said in a statement.

It added that the programme was initiated and endorsed at the first meeting held Aug 15.

“This programme will work under the advisory of Dr Zamri Rosli, who is the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences dean.

“It is chaired by Assoc Prof Dr Geoffery James Gerusu and dedicated team members comprising Assoc Prof Dr Leong Sui Sien, Dr Waseem Razzaq Khan, Dr Owen Yeo Thian Seng, Manggi Rabong, Khairul Annuar Muhammad Suhailee, Awang Ahmad Nizam Awang Saberan, and Mohamad Nasri Sinjan.

“At the same time, Mohamad Nasri is working as a liaison officer in this programme,” it said.
