BINTULU: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu plans to set up the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Research Chair in honour of the former Sarawak Chief Minister's effort to preserve the country's ethnic diversity.

UPM Bintulu Campus Director, Professor Dr Bujang Kim Huat said today, Sarawakians still remember the contributions and sacrifices of the former Chief Minister, also affectionately called Tok Nan.

“Even though he is no longer with us, his service and sacrifice continue to thrive in the spirit of ‘Sarawakian children'. He was well-respected and known for being a people-oriented leader regardless of race and religion,” he said.

He said this when attending the International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities (ICOSSH) 2019, here yesterday.

Bujang said, due to Tok Nan's efforts, the term 'others' for declaring racial identity in Sarawak was abolished in order to preserve ethnic identity in Borneo.

"Through his efforts, Sarawak's indigenous peoples can declare their ethnicity in writing in all forms of official government affairs," he said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak’s Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah welcomed the proposal in recognition of Tok Nan's great contribution.

“Throughout his life, Tok Nan has made great progress in the society of this country by fostering unity in diversity regardless of race or religion.

“We welcome the establishment of this Research Chair which will be housed under the Borneo Ethnic Research Center, UPM Bintulu Campus and administered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Management.

"This will help in the field of social science research related to Borneo ethnic groups especially in Sarawak," he said.
