This book is a distillation of our experiences in soil fertility and waste management research at Universiti Putra Malaysia. We were motivated to write this book because of limited information available in the fields of agricultural and environmental sciences which focusses on sustainable management of soil nitrogen availability in tropical acid soils using clinoptilolite zeolite and composts derived from agricultural wastes. Chapter 1 focuses on the importance of managing soil nitrogen availability and agricultural wastes into composts (organic amendments) for sustained productivity of soils and crops. Soil nitrogen fractions and their availability are discussed in Chapter 2. The beneficial effects clinoptilolite zeolite and composts on soils are highlighted in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 provides information on the conversion of agricultural wastes into composts through co-composting. Chapters 5, 6, 7, and 8 cover laboratory assessment of co-application of urea, clinoptilolite zeolite, and composts on soil nitrogen availability. Chapters 9 and 10 discuss the effects of combined use of inorganic fertilizers, clinoptilolite zeolite, and composts on maize (Zea mays L.) and soil productivity. Chapter 11 discusses the economic viability of including clinoptilolite zeolite and organic amendments in maize cultivation on a tropical acid soils. Summary, conclusions, and recommendations are provided in Chapter 12.
