KUCHING: The establishment of the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Chair will continue the legacy of the fifth Sarawak Chief Minister who deeply loves Sarawak and the state's cultural heritage. Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it was also believed to benefit future generations.

"This research chair is Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) Sarawak's appreciation to the struggle of the late Tok Nan (Adenan Satem) as a Sarawakian." Throughout his life, Tok Nan brought prosperity to the people of Sarawak in the name of unity regardless of race and religion, "he said. while delivering a speech at the Opening Ceremony of the International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities 2021 (ICOSSH 2021) at a hotel here yesterday.

The ceremony was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and attended by UPM Board Chairman Tengku Syarif Laksamana Perlis Dato 'Seri Diraja Syed Razlan Syed Putra Jamalullail, Sarawak Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting, State Assemblyman (ADUN) Tanjong Datu Datuk Amar

Jamilah Anu, Vice-Chancellor of UPM Professor Dr B.T. Hang Tuah Baharudin and UPMKB Director Associate Professor Dr Shahrul Razid Sarbini. At the ceremony, there was also an exchange of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sarawak Government and UPM for the establishment of the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Chair. Abdul Karim, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, said through the establishment of the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Chair, a database on the Borneo community was created to further expand the study on Borneo ethnic groups.

He also believes that the results of the research conducted through the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Chair which used an initial fund of RM2.54 million from the state government will be the reference for the state government's policy planning. “The Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Chair will be placed under the Borneo Ethnic Research Center and managed by the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Science at UPMKB." The research centre and faculty specialize in social science research on Borneo ethnic groups in Sarawak, "he said.

He added that the available expertise will help the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Sarawak Government to collect treasures that have yet to be explored or highlighted. Therefore, he said, his ministry had agreed to fund the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Chair at UPMKB not only for the next three years but several years after that. At the ceremony, Jamilah, who is also the wife of the late Adenan, presented a special contribution of RM30,000 to the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Chair.
