FINISHING SCHOOL COURSE - EMPOWERING GRADUATES TO ADD VALUE

UPM BINTULU SARAWAK CAMPUS - The thing that worries students, especially final year students, is their direction and fate after graduation. Having a job that suits the abilities and educational background is important for an individual to enjoy job satisfaction. However, before stepping into work in an organization, some graduates experience failure at the beginning of the job application phase.

The issue of unemployment among graduates is not a new phenomenon in our country but around the world. According to statistical findings from the Graduate Tracking Research System (SKPG), almost 60% of graduates at the Undergraduate level and above in Malaysia are still unemployed after a year of completing their studies. This issue stems from various factors such as those related to the readiness of graduates in facing the world of work.

Looking at this scenario, the Student Affairs Division, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) has designed a program called the Finishing School Course specifically for UPMKB students.

"Among the main objectives of organizing this program is to provide added value to students in preparation for the world of work as well as increase students' knowledge of important aspects and elements that need to be emphasized when facing the interview session," said Dr Kamil Bin Latif, Principal of the College / Head of Student Affairs, UPMKB and also the Advisor of this Finishing School Course.

“We are very grateful to the Bintulu Divisional Manpower Office, Sarawak Manpower Department, Ministry of Human Resources for the assistance and cooperation given in preparing the modules and providing speakers for the course. A word of appreciation is also given to the UPMKB 2021 Student Representative Council and the staff of the Student Affairs Division, UPMKB who are involved in organizing this course,” he added again.

The program which was implemented on 24 April 2021 has succeeded in attracting more than 110 participants from various years of study which not only consists of students who are on campus but also involves students who are in their hometowns. This program has been implemented online through the Webex application to comply with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) outlined by the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and the National Security Council (MKN) to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“A total of 3 slots have been implemented in this program and have been presented by Pn. Kerry Anthony Binti Marup, Assistant Director of Manpower, Bintulu Division Manpower Office, Sarawak Manpower Department, Ministry of Human Resources, namely Slot 1: Let's Find a Job, Slot 2: Writing Resume & Job - Related Letters and Interview Tips ”said En. Mohamad Syukri Mohamad Adnan, Senior Assistant Registrar, Student Affairs Division, UPMKB cum Finishing School Course Coordinator this time.

“The average feedback received from participants is very encouraging and suggests that this program be implemented more often. Indeed, we aim to implement this program every year, ”he added.

The organization of this program is seen to be able to achieve the objectives of the organization and at the same time give a positive impact to UPMKB graduates to be able to compete in the increasingly challenging job market today.
