BASIC COURSE ON FRESHWATER FISH BREEDING BY AQUACULTURE IS BENEFICIAL FOR YOUTH

20 participants comprising youths around Bintulu participated in the Basic Course on Aquaculture Freshwater Fish Breeding organised by the Sebiew Youth Club under the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Bintulu Division) in collaboration with the Putra Agricultural Centre (PPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB), recently.

The course is held at the Official Center for Men's Agriculture (Theory) and Hatcheri &Fish Pond, The Center for Men's Agriculture (Practical) at UPMKB.

According to Dr Carlina Freddie Simol @ Rachellynna, Senior Agriculture Officer of the Putra Agricultural Centre (Officer Seranta) Dr Carlina Freddie Simol @ Rachellynna, the programme was aimed at providing exposure to the youths on theories related to freshwater fish farming by aquaculture including the management of freshwater fish farming, the basics of fish nutrition and fish health management.

The course was conducted by a speaker with expertise in the field of fisheries especially in the field of Genetics and Inbreeding, namely Assoc Prof Dr Amy Halimah Rajaee who is a lecturer in the Department of Animal Science and Fisheries, UPMKB since 2006 until now. He is also the Deputy Director of Putra Agricultural Centre, UPMKB.

Practical training / amaliation of freshwater fish hatchery techniques (injection of stimulating hormones in the mother and the process of fertilizing eggs) as well as the provision of hatchery tanks are also controlled by Lirong Yu Abit who is experienced and proficient in the field with the help of Ayum Balai and Raymond Lau.

The Bintulu Youth and Sports Officer Kigen Satong said the course was aimed at responding to the government's recommendations to increase the development of the agricultural industry in Malaysia especially in Sarawak and to benefit the participants of the course, especially the youths around Bintulu and UPMKB.

According to him, this course is one of a series of courses that have been planned in 2022 in the realization of youth entrepreneurship programmes and agricultural development activities with the general public.

The Putra UPMKB Agricultural Centre hopes that this kind of cooperation can continue with the Sebiew Youth Club and other agencies and would like to express its gratitude to the secretariat of Josephine Jawai Makos, photographer Benedict Miden and all parties involved directly or indirectly.

I would also like to thank the Director of UPMKB Campus Prof Dr Shahrul Razid Sarbini for always providing support in organising such courses as well as to the Chairman of Sebiew Youth Club Muhammad Suffian Ashmaidi for the initiative to implement this course.
