100 MILLION UPMKB TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN GETS THE SUPPORT OF THE INDUSTRY

CAMPAIGN The planting of 100 Million Trees in the strategy of preventing pollution through nature control for the period 2021 to 2025 at UPMKB Nirwana Forest in Bintulu received encouraging support from the industry.

The programme organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE) Bintulu with the industry is the '1 RAS (Environmental Partner) 1 Tree' and National River Trail in conjunction with World Environment Day 2022.

The programme was sponsored by Borneo Agro Resources Sdn Bhd, PSS Oil Mill Sdn Bhd and DD Palm Oil Mills Sdn Bhd which is the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme under the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) Certification to the community in Bintulu.

UPMKB Campus Director Professor Dr Shahrulrazid Sarbini said the basic planting programme on river cliffs aims to strengthen river cliffs and reduce rights and indirectly add to both the habitat and life of the river.

"This development programme also reduces the impact of global warming and makes it a green area for the Bintulu community," he said at the programme in Bintulu, recently.

He expressed his appreciation to the Bintulu DOE who has chosen the Faculty of Agricultural Science and Forestry UPMKB as a strategic partner for the greening programme.

Meanwhile, the Head of Bintulu DOE Branch, Abdul Mazli Hafiz Abdul Malik said the programme is a platform for cooperation between government agencies, public institutions of higher learning (IPTA) and the industry sector in the joint effort and responsibility of protecting the environment.

He said the programme can foster awareness among the local community to appreciate the functioning of the forest ecosystem.

"Such activities are able to boost environmental conservation consisting of biodiversity including the function of controlling the world's climate change," he said.

Earlier the programme was conducted by its Director Assoc Prof Dr Geoffery James Gerusu and Abdul Mazli Hafiz Abdul Malik from DOE Bintulu.

It was participated by 80 participants comprising UPMKB, DOE and three oil palm manufacturing companies involving the planting of 250 saplings from two local species, namely Engkabang Hati or its scientific name Shorea macrophylla and Plajau (Pentaspadon motleyi).
