A PROGRAM TO BUILD YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS - PREPARING FUTURE LEADERS

UPM KAMPUS BINTULU SARAWAK - Communication Skills are one of the 7 Soft Skills that are important for every graduate apart from Teamwork Skills, Leadership, Lifelong Learning, Entrepreneurship, Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, and Moral Ethics. If all these Soft Skills can be mastered and appreciated, it will be an added value for a graduate as a preparation for future employment.

Citing a statement from Datuk Haji Shamsuddin Bardan, Secretary of the Malaysian Employers Federation when interviewed by one of the leading newspapers, he stated that the private sector today does not only look at the academic background but also at what an individual can do. What is sad is that there are still many graduates who can display the content of a very good resume that is a very excellent academic achievement but fail to communicate well during the interview session.

Undoubtedly, various efforts have been made by the ministry and other relevant parties to improve students' Soft Skills including communication skills such as the implementation of Credited Co-Curriculum activities at the university, special task presentation activities, participation in associational activities and so on. However, to hone these communication skills is not an effort that can be done in the blink of an eye but it requires more time and effort as well as continuous improvement.

Looking at this scenario, the Student Affairs Division, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) has designed and implemented a program that focuses on communication skills called the Program to Promote Your Communication Skills. This program is organized specifically for UPMKB student leaders including the Student Representative Council, College Representative Council, Sri Rajang College and the UPMKB Student Club / Association Supreme Committee.

"One of the main objectives of organizing this program is to increase participants 'knowledge of effective communication techniques and further increase participants' confidence to communicate better," said Dr Kamil Bin Latif, College Principal / Head of Student Affairs, UPMKB and Advisor for this program.

“We are very grateful to the line-up of speakers consisting of lecturers and UPMKB officers themselves for the cooperation given in the preparation of the module and subsequently delivering related talks with full dedication. A word of appreciation is also given to the UPMKB 2021 Student Representative Council and the staff of the Student Affairs Division, UPMKB who are involved in organizing this program,” he added again.

The program which was implemented on 26 June 2021 was attended by more than 115 student leaders who not only consisted of students on campus but also involved students in their respective hometowns. This program has been implemented online through the Cisco Webex application to comply with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) outlined by the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and the National Security Council (MKN) to curb the spread of Covid-19.

A total of 3 slots have been implemented in this program, namely Slot 1: Concept, Style and Language of Effective Communication (presented by Pn. Rosidah Basir, Senior Assistant Registrar, Sri Rajang College, UPMKB), Slot 2: Manners, Ethics and Methods of Internal Communication Organization (presented by Mr Mohamad Syukri Mohamad Adnan, Senior Assistant Registrar, Student Affairs Division, UPMKB) and Slot 3: Building Confidence in Communicating (presented by Dr Hanisah Kamilah Abd. Razak, Senior Lecturer, Department of Plant Science, Faculty of Science Agriculture and Forestry, UPMKB) ”said En. Mohamad Syukri Mohamad Adnan, cum Coordinator of the Program to Promote Your Communication Skills this time.

“On average, the feedback received from participants is very encouraging and suggests that this program be implemented more often and hope that such programs can be implemented face to face in the future. Indeed, we aim to implement this program every year, ”he added.

The organization of this program is seen to be able to achieve the objectives of its organization and at the same time give a positive impact to the future leaders of the country.
