400KG OF GARBAGE SUCCESSFULLY COLLECTED AT TANJUNG BATU BEACH, BINTULU

IN CONJUNCTION with World Environment Day 2022, an environmental awareness programme was implemented in collaboration with five entities in Bintulu namely Petronas Dagangan Berhad, Department of Environment (DOE) Bintulu Branch, Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Bintulu Branch, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) and NGO Trash Hero Bintulu at Tanjung Batu beach,    Bintulu on 21 May.

Head of DOE Bintulu Branch Abdul Mazli Hafiz Abdul Malik in his environmental awareness briefing expressed his deepest appreciation to Petronas Dagangan Berhad as an industry sector operating in Bintulu for collaborating on this programme and said it is the responsibility of all parties to jointly safeguard the environment to continue to be preserved for future generations.

The Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, UPMKB, Associate Professor Dr Geoffery James Gerusu also stated this program as a platform for cooperation between government agencies, IPTA and the industry sector to maintain the cleanliness of public recreation areas such as Tanjung Batu beach in the hope that such programmes can be organised again in the future.

The programme, named as Kutip Garbage While Recreation (KUDAH), was held in conjunction with the World Environment Day Celebration 2022 which was fully sponsored by Petronas Dagangan Berhad as one of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to the community especially in Bintulu.

The objective of this programme was to raise public awareness on the importance of environmental care and to clean up the national river trail area as well as to promote the culture of the Garbage Collection while Recreation (KUDAH) in the local community.

The programme was an environmental briefing, an environmental quiz and a gotong-royong activity to collect rubbish along the beach where the proceeds had managed to collect 400 kilograms (kg) of rubbish which was mostly plastic bottles of drinks and polytherine food containers.

The participants of the programme also realized that plastic materials should not be disposed of and have adverse effects on the environment.

This effort will also promote environmental awareness among the public especially the residents of Bintulu, Sarawak.

Through awareness of the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of the beach, the spirit of love for the environment will be nurtured among the participants as well as fostering a spirit of cooperation and harmony.

Interestingly, the programme received a very good response with the participation of 70 participants comprising representatives of government agencies, Petronas PDB staff, IPTA representatives, members of Environmental Partners (RAS) as well as environmental NGOs who have been involved in the success of this environmental awareness program.
