ARTS in Islam encompasses various aspects such as vocal arts, self-defence, sports, writings and more. If we trace back the historical background of Islamic arts, we will bear witness to the value of these arts which has grown on the Islamic communities since time immemorial.

Compared to contemporary arts that are more influenced western cultures, Islamic arts are unique in that they focus more on the inculcation of virtuous values in line with the purity and demands of Islam itself.

Recognizing the importance of Islamic art to be cherished and highlighted, the Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak (MTACYS) will be organizing the Islamic Art Festival 2019 (iFest2019) with the theme ‘Global Integration of Islamic Arts’ from September the 23rd to 28th.

Programme Director, Senior Assistant Registrar Mohamad Syukri Mohamad Adnan said the maiden programme organised by the UPMKB would feature activities such as Khat Writing Competition, Quran Recitation Competition, Storytelling Contest, Religious Lecture Contest, Contemporary Nasyid Contest and Archery Contest.

“All of these contests offer cash prizes, trophies and certificates of participation to the winners. In addition to the competitions, iFest2019 will also host the Prime Forum which is scheduled to be held on September the 28th at 7.30 p.m. at the Sri Kenyalang Hall, UPMKB. The Prime Forum this time featured Pencetus Ummah (PU) Azman as Forum Moderator and Prof. Dr Taufiq Yap Yun Hin (Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah) and Ustaz Elyas Ismail (Consultant / Motivator) as a forum panel member," he added.

One of the main goals of the iFest2019 is to encourage the community, especially the youth to engage in healthy activities and to create better personalities while also giving the community a chance to showcase their talents through the competitions.

In addition, iFest2019 is said to be able to promote Sarawak in general and Bintulu in particular as one of the tourist destinations as it is open to all including Indonesian and Brunei participants.
