PALM OIL INDUSTRIAL-PUBLIC UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP FOR OUTREACH COMMUNITY PROGRAM AT SEPING LONG BALA, BELAGA, SARAWAK

A strategic collaboration was conducted between Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, UPMKB and Glenealy Plantations Sdn Bhd (GPSB) through a community outreach program with a theme “TOGETHERNESS PROSPERITY SOCIETY” at Rh. Louis Nyagong Lenjau, Seping Long Bala, Belaga, Sarawak on 05th May 2023. This joint-party community outreach program is focused mainly to transfer the knowledge and know-how from higher institution learning and palm oil industry to the communities at Seping Long Bala, Belaga.

The opening remarks of the program was delivered by Mr. Chieng Kai Soon, Senior Sustainability Manager for Glenealy Plantations Sdn Bhd (GPSB). He elaborates that this program targeted to help, uplift, support and reach beyond those communities located within GPSB areas through knowledge transfer and sharing essential information related to their daily livelihood and welfare. He also mentioned that such a program aims to impose positive relationship among communities, industrial and higher learning institute via contributing collaborator expertise in related field towards resilience communities. This relationship helps to create trust and understanding between different groups, which can lead to increased cooperation and collaboration in future.

The local fruit tree planting activity during the outreach program was led by Tuai Rumah Louis Nyagong Lenjau. Approximately 50 seedlings of various fruit species including Musang King (D197), Petai (Parkia speciosa) and Dabai (Canarium odonthophylum) were planted at selected Long Bala community land area. This activity was done to emphasis towards greener environment and the most important thing is, for the economic empowerment for Long Bala communities.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, UPMKB, Dr. Zamri Bin Rosli whose also present during the event said that this outreach programs often focused on addressing specific needs in a community involves. Involvement of community members with their active participation is vital to ensure that all participants gain beneficiary and essential knowledge from such program. He also stated that a long-term sustainability and positive impact gaining from this program is also highly emphasized. Therefore, monitoring on impact evaluation through continuous communication and engagement with Long Bala community is vital to determine the effectiveness of the program.

The other highlights of the program include conducting three sharing-knowledge sessions consisting of educational awareness presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Geoffery James Gerusu of UPMKB, develop home-composting based on know-how process demonstrated by Mr. Sat Maling of UPMKB, and, sharing essential information related with good agriculture practices to manage and maintain oil palm plantation was presented by Mr. Alexander Takap from GPSB. These specific knowledge-transfer events target to improve the knowledge among the Long Bala community members and aligns with its goal for sustainability and yield enhancement for the community. About 80 Long Bala community members were actively involved and participated in this one-day program

In moving forward, this outreach program enable to empower Long Bala community members by providing them with knowledges and opportunities to improve their livelihood. It also helps to strengthen social connections among the palm oil industry, higher learning institute and community involves through encouraging a sense of shared responsibility and identity which promote social cohesion and a stronger sense of community in general. The program was fully funded by Glenealy Plantations Sdn Bhd.
