TRAINING COURSE ON INDUCED BREEDING TECHNIQUES AND FRESH WATER FISH MANAGEMENT COURSE FOR CAGE AND POND CULTURE

This course is organized by University Agriculture Park (TPU) of Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) on 22 – 23 February 2020. According to Dr. Ong Kian Huat, Director of University Agriculture Park and Development, UPMKB, this training course are among a series of training courses planned by the TPU for 2020 as a part of University4Society program.

The objectives of this training course according to Mr. Nalong Buda, Head of University Agriculture Park are to: (i) support government's recommendations to further enhance the agricultural industry in Malaysia especially in Sarawak; (ii) improve breeding skills with good farming methods and practices for viable project implementation; (iii) transfer knowledge and technology to breeders to improve their productivity and quality of farm produce; and (iv) instill entrepreneurial traits to breeders.

This course is interesting because all participants, according to Madam Carlina Freddie Simol @ Rachellynna Senior Agriculture Officer, organizing chairman for this training course, will be given:

  1. A theoretical exposure to freshwater fish management in pond culture systems;
  2. A theoretical briefing on freshwater fish management in cage culture systems;
  3. A theoretical briefing on fish nutrition and health management of freshwater fish;
  4. A practical exposure to freshwater fish breeding methods through induced breeding techniques (injection of stimulating hormone to parent fish and egg fertilization process) as well as preparation of hatching tank;
  5. Promoting propagation of local fish species (Clarias nieuhofii) as a viable alternative to introduced species such as the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus);
  6. Sharing a knowhow on critical care and management of larval stage fish directly after hatching (nutrition and water quality);
  7. Hands-on practical on feed preparation (live and formulated feeds) for larval stage fish; and
  8. Learn how to prepare a floating fish cage for freshwater fish farming.

According to Mr. Dexter Elvin Menari Asisstant Registrar, this training course have attracted a total of 60 participations from people all over Sarawak with lecture and practical classes were conducted by UPMKB academic staff (Dr. Mohamad Faizul Bin Mat Isa) and assisted by knowledgeable field practitioner Mr. Lirong Yu Abit.
