UPMKB History

Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB) is not one of the new institutions of higher learning in the country. It is in fact, the oldest campus in Sarawak. The history of Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus dates all the way back to August 10th 1974, when it was a temporary campus under the National Resources Training Centre in Semenggok, Kuching. This campus was later relocated to a permanent campus site in Bintulu Sarawak in June 1987.

On 27th August, 1987, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Sarawak was officially established as a branch campus through the Perintah Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (Kampus) (No. 2) 1987 with under 3 centres of learning – the Centre for Applied Sciences, the Centre for Basic Sciences and the Centre for Social Sciences and Management. These centres offer three programmes at the diploma level, i.e. the Diploma in Agriculture, the Diploma in Forestry, the Diploma n Agribusiness as well as a pre-diploma preparatory programme.

UPMKB is situated 13 km from the town of Bintulu and is surrounded by lush green forest rich with many different types of flora and fauna. The campus grounds cover an area of 714.178 hectares with facilities that accommodate up to 2,800 students.

UPMKB is a branch campus of UPM and currently consists of one faculty, the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences. This faculty is comprised of five academic departments: the Department of Crop Science, the Department of Forestry Science, the Department of Social Science, the Department of Basic Science and Engineering, and the Department of Animal Science and Fishery.
